The Runaway Bride
A/N sorry for typos
Maybe Baekhyun was a really good hide and seek player when he was a child because as hard as Chanyeol tried to find him, the little brunet would not turn up anywhere. Chanyeol figured that Baekhyun was going to the extreme just to avoid him, but by the time two months passed, Chanyeol grew tired and antsy. There were times when he thought that it was no longer worth it, but immediately after, he would mentally slap himself, reminding himself that knights never gave up and Baekhyun was like Rapunzel, but without the hair. He just had to find another way into the prince's tower.
But two months was really a hassle. Chanyeol couldn’t just set aside work outside of his home just to look for a runaway bride-to-be. He did, however, move temporarily in the city so he could make Baekhyun one of his top priorities despite not having any lead on the guy.
When Chanyeol tried to hire an investigator, all were willing to work for him at first, but then a few days later, they would all call back, apologizing about how they had to cancel their services for him. The first and second investigators were odd, but by the time the third, fourth, and so on began to cancel on him, Chanyeol figured that a third party obviously didn’t want him to find Baekhyun.
Chanyeol carried on with his work, meeting potential investors and signing with different businesses that would provide him the raw materials for his work, but Baekhyun was never far from his mind. Even if Chanyeol wanted to forget, the countless relatives who asked him about his upcoming wedding with the Byuns made it impossible.
Sometimes when he was alone at home--his apartment “home”-- Chanyeol would wonder how many more days he had to cross off from his calendar until Baekhyun was ready to show himself. Two months had gone by and Baekhyun could’ve done a million things in that time. He could’ve found someone else if he was the type of guy to move on quickly, which Chanyeol knew he wasn’t, but then again, Baekhyun didn’t have much of a clean and steady record.
During the night of one of his partner’s opening where one of his inventions was a featured asset to the business, Chanyeol had to attend the party. Kris accompanied him as his right hand man, but mainly for the purpose of explaining the company’s invention for him because Chanyeol, in all honesty, didn’t want to explain again and again what his machine was capable of doing.
In those two months, Mrs. Byun’s words about Baekhyun accidentally popping up seemed like complete bullshit that a desperate lover would believe. But at the party, Chanyeol spotted a very small, very brunet, and very annoying face in the crowd with his arms locked with stranger.
At first, he didn’t believe that his eyes were seeing correctly until he blinked a few times and heard the laugh that made him want to pull his hair out. Instinctively, Chanyeol eyed the man next to his brunet and immediately a flame of possessiveness and jealousy overcame him.
Not caring about the petty folks who he was “conversing” with along with Kris, Chanyeol pushed everyone in his way off to the side as he quickly paced over to where his fiancé was clinging onto a man that was most definitely not him.
The loud music drowned out his voice, but the second time that Chanyeol yelled out the name, he was closer to the brunet and when the male lifted his head up and looked back at him, Chanyeol knew that his presence was known.
Chanyeol didn’t know what he expected. Maybe Baekhyun was supposed to break down and cry. Ideally, Chanyeol wanted him to run back to him with his arms wide open, crying about how he had made a mistake. However, after living with Baekhyun for enough time, Chanyeol knew that the idiot would do something a little more drastic and uncalled for.
Without warning, Baekhyun spazzed, yelped, and let go of his partner, who may or may not have been his new boyfriend. The thought of the man being Baekhyun’s new love interest must have bothered Chanyeol to a breaking point because just as Baekhyun ran away, Chanyeol took the time to grab the man by the collar of his designer suit and push him on the ground. He was just about to punch the man with one of his fists when he caught Baekhyun’s figure pause from the corner of his eye.
The crowd around them seemed to have stopped to view the situation at hand, but Chanyeol didn’t give a shit. They could have stared all day, and yet it wouldn’t have mattered if Chanyeol managed to catch the runaway punk.
“Get off of him!”
Chanyeol didn’t know why, but even Baekhyun’s angry and displeased voice seemed like music to his ears.
Doing just as Baekhyun told him, but in his own free will, Chanyeol rose from the ground. “Come here.”
In that moment, Chanyeol should’ve known better than to expect Baekhyun to obey like a dog. Perhaps he would have before, but right then and there, Baekhyun was no longer in the mindset of doing anything out of love for him.
For people who looked like they could be civil with one another, Chanyeol figured they looked like two business men who were ready to brawl. Baekhyun’s perfect hair, makeup, suit, and entire appearance would have blown Chanyeol away completely if it wasn’t for the fact that he wasn’t supposed to look that way. Byun Baekhyun--future Park Baekhyun-- was supposed to be back at home dressed in his mismatched pajamas, ugly tacky t-shirts matched with a cardigan and complaining about cleaning the bathrooms for the third time that week.
The next thing that Chanyeol knew, Baekhyun turned back around and started running for the venue exit. Immediately, he followed after, running as fast as the shorty in front of him.
Time after time, Chanyeol yelled out Baekhyun’s name, and in turn, Baekhyun would scream profanities back at him as he continued to push through people until he eventually pushed out of the building.
The chase was much more tiring than Chanyeol thought it would be. After running out the building, he quickly looked around and spotted Baekhyun running across the parking lot. The small male was so desperate, he didn’t even try to run around the obstacles in his way.
As Chanyeol kept his legs moving, he continued to watch Baekhyun and witness the idiot that he fell in love with live up to his record of stupidity.
Desperate and in a hurry, Baekhyun would try and jump over the shrubs in the parking lot. Physics wasn’t on his side when his left leg would get caught and he’d end up falling on the hard, dark cement.
“Quit running!” Chanyeol angrily demanded as he got closer to the fallen male. It already pissed him off that Baekhyun continued to run. The fact that he probably hurt himself was another block of annoyance in itself.
Chanyeol thought he stood a chance in catching up because of the fact that the last shrub Baekhyun tried to jump over had caught him by the pants. But in that moment, Baekhyun was so scared of being caught that he unzipped his pants and hurriedly slipped out.
With shiny shoes, a beautiful top, and tacky underpants, Baekhyun made a run for the street. Chanyeol’s pace was hindered by the scene. He didn’t know why, but he stopped to pick up the disgraced pants before continuing to chase after the idiot.
From where he was, Chanyeol could see that Baekhyun was running out of breath.
In all honesty, if Baekhyun was anybody else, Chanyeol wouldn’t have bothered to run out of a building and across a parking lot for the chance of catching up to him again. Love was always tiresome and he never had an interest in anybody strong enough to push him into doing hardcore physical work just to keep the relationship intact.
But Baekhyun was the exception.
Baekhyun was the exception that was about to cross heavy traffic.
The sun was setting and Chanyeol was damn sure that Baekhyun wasn’t wearing any reflective gear on him to indicate to the cars that he was even present. By the time that Baekhyun reached the sidewalk, Chanyeol slowed down and came to slow stop. Completely breathless, he locked eyes with Baekhyun when the brunet turned his head back as if to question his next move.
They were no less than twenty-five feet away, but Chanyeol saw the moderate traffic right in front of Baekhyun and had a feeling that if he took one step more towards him, the male would try and run across the busy street.
Both of them were out of breath and it took a moment for Chanyeol to formulate something to say. There were so many things he wanted to ask, wanted to know, and ultimately, wanted to do, but his options were limited. He wanted to know who that man was back at the party; he wanted to know what Baekhyun had been doing all that time; and he wanted to know what Baekhyun was so afraid of just by talking it all out with him.
Pursing his lips and gripping the slightly ripped and abandoned pants in his hand, Chanyeol lifted the material up and held it out in Baekhyun’s direction. “Come back here and put on some pants, you idiot.”
Baekhyun jaw locked. When Chanyeol took the chance and moved an inch, Baekhyun immediately dropped to the ground and took off his shoe. Then he stood in rigid stance with the footwear above his head and Chanyeol couldn’t help but think about how completely uncivil they must have looked to other people.
After no response was given and all that was filled between them were the sounds of the passing vehicles, Chanyeol gave Baekhyun a stern look. “We haven’t seen each other in two goddamn months because you’ve been off doing god knows what. I really just want to take you, Baek. I want to take you by the hand, throw you into a taxi and pay for the entire ride back home, but right now, I’m starting out small. Put on the pants. I don’t want other people to see my fucking fiancé in his underpants--”
“I’m not your fiancé,” Baekhyun sharply cut in, frowning at Chanyeol and doing his best to furrow his brows in an angry fashion.
Chanyeol’s hands tightened. “Even if you don’t acknowledge me personally, I still have the right to call you what you lawfully are, which is my fiancé, according to the contract--”
Frustrated, Baekhyun fidgeted and looked about before keeping still once again. “I’m going to annul the contract,” he declared in a shaky voice, “I’m going to break it--”
Tilting his head off to the side, Chanyeol lowered his hand and softly looked at Baekhyun’s hurt and upset appearance. “You’ve had two months. Why haven’t you yet?”
“I…I’ve been…” Baekhyun turned his gaze to the ground as he grinded his teeth together. “I’ve been busy.”
“Funny,” Chanyeol scoffed. “You’ve been running from me for two months, scurrying around the city with whoever that guy was, trying to forget me probably, but you just happen to forget to cut the only contract keeping you and I relevant to each other--”
“We’re not relevant to each other--”
“Let’s stop lying and running, Byun Baekhyun!” Chanyeol snapped. “We’re standing on a fucking sidewalk. You have no pants on. I just chased you out of a damn building. You’ve fallen on enough shrubs to bruise your delicate little knees and you’re one step away from suicide. And all this because you don’t want to just sit down and talk this all out with me--”
“We already talked! Months ago!” Baekhyun argued.
“Yeah, we did. I thought you understood where I was coming from, but guess who fucking left in the dead of night!?” Chanyeol said bringing up the memory. “You and I need to just talk, Baek.”
“I don’t want to talk right now…”
Slanting his shoulders, Chanyeol gave him a weak shrug. “Then when?”
“Didn’t you get the hint when I left you after you and I had sex?” Baekhyun asked. “I don’t want to be with you. That’s why I left.”
“What did I just say about lying, Baekhyun?” Chanyeol scowled.
Biting his lips, Baekhyun shook his head. “I’m not lying--”
“Then why the hell haven’t you annulled the contract if you don’t want to be with me!?” Chanyeol bit back. “Unless you’re holding on to the hope that you were wrong this entire time. Oh, or better yet, you already know you were wrong and you couldn’t get yourself to break it off. That’s it, isn’t it?”
Baekhyun kept silent, biting back his tongue.
“You left me without an explanation,” Chanyeol said in a hard voice. “Not a note-- Absolutely nothing to tell me what the hell I did wrong, because I thought you understood everything I said that night. So to wake up and you’re just fucking gone was a bit harsh.”
Part of Baekhyun’s reserve broke as he lowered his hand and dropped the threatening position of his shoe down. He detracted eye contact with Chanyeol before he mumbled, “I’m sorry…”
“If you’re really sorry, Baek, then quit running away from me,” Chanyeol said in a gentler tone. “I hate running after you because it shouldn’t even have to be this way.”
With the same sad expression on his face, Baekhyun lifted his eyes to meet Chanyeol’s a final time. “I’m sorry…”
Chanyeol was just about to think that he had breached past Baekhyun’s self-defense, but then Baekhyun put on his shoe once again. Quickly looking to the left and right of him, Baekhyun saw the traffic lights for the road turn green.
Then he ran across.
After seeing Baekhyun dash across, Chanyeol attempted to follow, but he was too late. By the time that he reached the edge, cars were zooming in front of him one after another. On the other side, he could see Baekhyun look back at him before glancing away and moving on.
Cursing, Chanyeol frantically hit the walk button although he knew that it wouldn’t stop traffic any faster. He made sure to keep an eye on Baekhyun, but once the male made a turn on a street and Chanyeol saw that the cars were not going to cease any time soon, he almost had a mental breakdown from all the frustration.
When Chanyeol finally managed to run across the street when the walk signal turned on, Baekhyun was already gone. He tried to follow the area in which Baekhyun took, but all efforts were in vain. When Chanyeol turned the corner where he saw Baekhyun disappear off to, he already knows it was pointless.
Like Baekhyun’s mother had told him, Baekhyun eventually did accidentally make an appearance. It was a lucky chance that Chanyeol, unfortunately, let slip through his desperate fingers.
