The Experimental Break Up
-Not Intended AU-
“Can we do something?”
“I don’t know. I’m busy right now. Why don’t you tell me what you want to do later tonight?”
“It’s not sex. It’s something else.”
“Do you need to go to town?”
“Do you need something from the city?”
“It’s not that.”
“Then what do you need?”
“I need to break up with you.”
Whatever Baekhyun read online was going to kill Chanyeol. He didn’t know what the hell this entire break up experiment was, but fine. He was going to go along with it. There wasn’t much he could do about it anyways. Arguing for ten minutes until Baekhyun promised that it’d only be temporary was enough to tire him out, so he said yes to the ridiculous request.
He didn’t know how absolutely ridiculous it would get.
“Baekhyun, when are you coming to bed?”
Chanyeol leaned against the wall, watching Baekhyun button up his yellow animal pajama and slip on his slippers. He waited for Baekhyun to approach him so they could go in the bedroom, but instead, Baekhyun turned around and started heading the other way.
“Where are you going?” Chanyeol called after him, pushing off the wall to follow.
“To another bedroom,” Baekhyun turned back, smiling as he said so.
Chanyeol frowned. “Why?”
“We’re separated, remember?” the small, prancing brunette said. “We don’t sleep together anymore.”
The giant wasn’t happy with the response. There was something wrong with that statement, specifically the part about not sleeping together. “You know,” he said, trying to refute, “people don’t have to be romantically involved to sleep in the same bed together.”
“Yeah, but they only do that if they’re on the verge of being romantic with one another, right?”
It was like a wild goose chase. Chanyeol didn’t know what to say or ask. Did this experiment go as far as Baekhyun pretending like they weren’t pretending? Was that part of the game? This experiment was stupid. What was Baekhyun’s entire purpose for this? Chanyeol couldn’t recall.
“Baekhyun, come on. Let’s just go to bed and we can start this break up thing tomorrow morning. I’ll make you breakfast and you can start pretending like you don’t love me anymore after you’re done eating and I’ve washed the dishes.”
Baekhyun shook his head much to Chanyeol’s annoyance. “The experiment must not be interrupted. I’d kiss you good-night, but we’re broken up, so I won’t. We can pretend that I’m kissing you on the cheek right now and hugging you for sweet dreams, but I’m not really doing that because we’re over. Okay. I hope you sleep well and regret the day you broke up with me, you asshole!”
Chanyeol watched as Baekhyun went off. Despite the fact that he was annoyed as hell about having to sleep alone without the small idiot snuggled in his arms, he did find it entertaining to watch Baekhyun struggling between his experimental persona and his regular self. Grumbling to himself, Chanyeol struck an arm up his shirt and started rubbing his chest in a lazy fashion while he went inside their master bedroom.
The bed felt extra empty that night.
“Did you miss me last night?”
Baekhyun set his magazine down on the table and drank his orange juice. “I was reading my books about perfect men and lovers last night. I wasn’t thinking about my past mistakes.”
Knowing that Baekhyun was referring to the mistake as him, Chanyeol rolled his eyes as he finished the rest of his coffee. “So, is our break up a bitter one? Since you’re over there calling me a mistake?”
“You could say,” Baekhyun said, flipping his hair.
“Tell me,” Chanyeol said, leaning back on his chair, “why did we break up?”
“Do you want the realistic one, or would you like a whole different story?”
Sighing, Baekhyun intertwined his fingers and leaned on the table. “Alright. Realistically, you and I are here, in this house. We broke up because I couldn’t stand you anymore. You were too overbearing, and one night, I came home smelling like alcohol and you accused me of cheating on you. To get back at me, you cheat on me, and I decide that that’s the last straw so we break up.”
Chanyeol was silent for a minute. “That’s not very nice of you to make me like a brute.”
“Then would you like to hear the fictional story?”
Biting his tongue to prevent himself from telling Baekhyun that both stories were fictional, Chanyeol nodded. “Sure.”
“You and I have been dating for two years. I’ve always loved you, however,” Baekhyun said, holding up a finger, “I come home one night and I see you sleeping with my sister! You and I get into a huge argument. You tell me you regret ever meeting me, and I tell you to go to hell. You’re in pain and so am I so we decide to break it off while you’re still in love with my sister.”
Putting a hand to his face, Chanyeol groaned. “This is ridiculous.”
Chanyeol watched as Baekhyun brushed his teeth in their master bathroom. It was silly how despite having five and a half other bathrooms in the house, Baekhyun insisted on using his “ex’s”. The silly faces the smaller one made in front of the mirror made the giant almost forgive him. Almost.
“Will you be sleeping in our bed tonight?”
“We can’t do that.”
“What’s the purpose of this experiment again?”
“To make our relationship stronger,” Baekhyun whispered in a low voice
before raising it back up again. “Now, stop being such a clingy ex and leave me alone.”
“We live in the same house,” Chanyeol said.
“Maybe one of us needs to move out.”
Pursing his lips, Chanyeol made sure that the brunette could see that he was dead-set against the idea. “You’re already sleeping in another room. That’s as far as I’m willing to let this game go on.”
Stomping his feet, Baekhyun growled before spitting his toothpaste. “Fine.” After washing out his mouth and wiping his lips on a piece of paper towel, he sighed. “Good-night, Mr. Park.”
While Chanyeol let Baekhyun walk past him and exit back to the hall, he crossed his arms. “Good-night to you, too, Byun Park.”
“Stop it, we’re broken up!” Baekhyun yelled to him all the way down the hall. “Do the experiment!”
Snorting, Chanyeol closed the door and started walking back to their bedroom. “Whatever.”
Baekhyun took things to the extreme. When they were washing the dishes together, their fingers accidentally touched. Chanyeol didn’t mind, but the little one beside him did. Quickly finishing his part, Baekhyun made sure to get out of the kitchen before Chanyeol could even finish drying the dishes and putting them on the rack.
The entire house also watched a movie during the afternoon. Usually, Baekhyun would sit next to Chanyeol for movie afternoons because he’d always say how he loved setting his head on the giant’s chest; but that particular day, Baekhyun decided to set his head on Luhan.
Jealousy was naturally sparked, but before Chanyeol could do anything, he was reminded of the experiment. Two days ago, he wouldn’t have cared, but then, if it mattered so much to the smaller one, then Chanyeol was willing to sit his ass back down and begrudgingly enjoy a movie about long lost lovers without having the pleasure of sitting next to his own lover.
Chanyeol didn’t ask if Baekhyun would sleep with him that night, and for a split second, he could’ve sworn he saw the boo-boo lip appear on Baekhyun’s face before the brunette padded off to his own bedroom.
There was a feeling in his gut that told him that Baekhyun was only planning to let the entire gig go on for a week, and Chanyeol thought he could handle it, but the moment he accidentally saw texts from strangers, men he didn’t know, sent to the brunette, there was nothing stopping the angry giant from interrupting the smaller male’s play on the beach with his dog.
“Baekhyun, what the fuck is this?”
Baekhyun stopped playing with Nugget, who had sensed the tall man’s anger and scurried off to bury himself in the sand elsewhere. When the brunette looked back to see where his dog had gone, he muttered, “Traitor,” before looking at the approaching giant.
“What’s what?” he said, tilting his head as he met Chanyeol half way.
“Who the hell is flirting with you through text?” Chanyeol growled, holding the phone screen in front of Baekhyun’s face when they were close enough to one another. “Why’s he asking if you can go over to his place? For what? A night of fun as he calls it!?”
“Oooh,” Baekhyun said slowly. “That’s no one.”
“Are you kidding?” Chanyeol snapped. “How the fuck is this no one!?”
“It’s honestly no one, and you shouldn’t care,” Baekhyun said calmly. “We’re broken up, remember?”
The experiment. The stupid goddamn experiment.
Chanyeol felt himself break.
Clutching the phone in his hand, he stepped forward, intimidatingly towering the brunette. “Listen to me. I love you, and that’s why I agreed to this stupid thing. I thought you were bored. Fine, my baby’s bored, so I’ll let him play this game with me.”
“Sleeping in the same room is important to me, you know that,” Chanyeol continued. “It’s intimate and it’s our time together, but for the sake of this game of yours, fine. I let it slide. I let you sleep elsewhere. Making up fake stories about our relationship? Fine. Whatever. Calling me an asshole as part of your role play? I can deal with that. Acting like I have the plague because, apparently, that’s how all exes treat each other? Okay. But this? Texting other people like you’re actually single? This is where I draw the line, Baekhyun! I didn’t agree with you talking to other guys so why the hell would you!?”
Baekhyun listened with a stoic look on his face until the other finished. “It’s no one—”
“Don’t tell me it’s no one when it’s clearly some guy!” Chanyeol angrily said, dropping Baekhyun’s phone on the sand. The brunette kept backing away as the giant went after him. “Do you realize how you’re making me feel right now? You’re making me feel bad, Baek!”
“Don’t say it like you don’t give a shit.” Reaching forward, Chanyeol took a hold of Baekhyun’s shirt and kept him still.
“And if I say I don’t?”
Clenching his jaw, Chanyeol shook his head. “Then I don’t know. At least tell me why you’d do this—”
“So you’re feeling upset?”
Chanyeol gave him a look. “Are you seriously asking me that?”
“Do you feel jealous?”
“Yes! God, yes! Are you stupid? I know you’re not, Baek, so why put up this stupid act!” Aggravated, Chanyeol growled. “I love you so much, I feel like I want to rip this guy into shreds. Tell me this is just a joke. You wouldn’t really do this, would you? It’s too…Baekhyun, tell me you’re just kidding before I actually kill this guy for even texting you.”
“It’s a joke.”
“Don’t say it just because I told you to say it!”
“I’m not kidding!” Baekhyun ripped himself from Chanyeol’s grip and retrieved his phone. Afterwards, he showed the giant the text again. “It’s an app. I can automate text messages based on a fake name and send that to myself.”
It took a minute to render, but it was enough for Chanyeol to want to drop on the ground and dig himself a grave. Baekhyun was laughing, but the giant was less amused. Taking the phone from Baekhyun, Chanyeol began to intimidate the brunette again until Baekhyun accidentally tripped on his own feet and fell back on the sand.
“The experiment said that eventually the couple would get used to the feeling of being separated, and although they would have never thought about it, they would end up staying permanently broken because of the realization that they really didn’t want to be together anymore,” Baekhyun said with a wobbly smile. “I thought that if we tried it, we’d end up the same, even though I didn’t want that. I just…wanted to see how well we’d do, I guess.”
“You’re stupid. You’re absolutely fucking stupid,” Chanyeol told him, dropping to his knees so that they were nearly at eye level with one another. “I would’ve committed murder today. If that’s not enough to tell you that I don’t want anyone else to hold you, then I don’t know what will.”
Grinning, Baekhyun leaned forward and kissed the giant’s worried face, eventually giving him a peck on the lips. “Kiss me like you mean it and I’ll conclude this experiment.
Taking the brunette up on that offer, Chanyeol did just so. Not only did he kiss his love on the cheek and lips, but also on the neck and behind the ears. Once Baekhyun’s swim shorts were pulled down and he was on his hands and knees with his ass stuck up in the air, Chanyeol kissed (licked, fucked, whatever else Baekhyun wanted) the brunette’s little pink hole, too.
Once inside the house, Sehun shook his head while the Kyungsoo muttered, “Rabbits.”
