Make Believe & Cases
Waking up, Chanyeol found himself lying with another body next to him. Though groggy minded, he found that he didn’t need to think much about who it was or what had happened the night before. He felt right and felt like the whole world had become balanced in some odd way, so to him, there was no doubt that it was Baekhyun who was beside him with their legs tangled and with Baekhyun’s arm flung over his chest.
For a moment, Chanyeol thought that he could lie for a moment and perhaps fall back to sleep, but when his eyes glanced over at the time, he was surprised to see that it was already past noon—though at the same time, their early morning activities were obviously the cause of it all.
Shifting his body, Chanyeol carefully rolled Baekhyun on his back so he could slowly pull away. Once he set his feet on the floor, Chanyeol made his tired way over to his bathroom, but not before another look at the sleeping, butt-naked male in his bed.
When Chanyeol came out of the shower, he opened the door to see that Baekhyun had kicked the blankets off the bed and was sitting with his legs crossed as he rubbed his eyes. Chanyeol watched him as he groaned and ruffled his messy bed hair.
“Morning…” Baekhyun mumbled as he looked up at Chanyeol with tired eyes.
“Morning,” Chanyeol threw back. Moving over to his dresser, he turned his back towards Baekhyun for a moment. “It’s already past noon so you might wanna get up.”
Tiredly, Baekhyun nodded. “Okay…” he said. Then he sluggishly rolled out of bed and stumbled as he tried to gain his balance on his feet.
“Are you okay?” Chanyeol asked as he watched Baekhyun’s minor struggle to stay up right.
“Yeah, I’m fine,” Baekhyun mumbled, waving a hand at Chanyeol. “I’m gonna go take a shower. I feel gross.”
Chanyeol pulled out a shirt from his dresser and set it on his bed. Crouching down, he picked up the thin bed covers and strode over to Baekhyun, throwing it over him. “Don’t strut around the house naked.”
Baekhyun let out a soft scoff. “I don’t strut and I’m only walking across the hallway.”
“Still.” Swooping down, Chanyeol stole a quick kiss, making Baekhyun scrunch his face. “I’ll see you in the kitchen.” Giving Baekhyun a quick hit on the ass, Chanyeol smirked. “Go.”
Baekhyun gave him a look before turning around and trudging his way to the door. Then he stopped and turned his head back. “Hey, I’ve been meaning to ask. When am I getting my money?”
Chanyeol blinked. “What money? For what?” he asked. “Money for sleeping with me?”
Taken aback, Baekhyun shook his head. “No. For cleaning your house—I’m still your maid.”
Breathing slightly better, Chanyeol thinned his lips. “We’re gonna have to change that pretty soon,” he mumbled under his breath.
“Why do you want to know?” Chanyeol said, quickly changing the subject. “Do you need it for something?”
“I need to buy some new releases,” Baekhyun replied excitedly.
Chanyeol looked at Baekhyun for a moment before sighing and rolling his eyes. Waving him off, Chanyeol cocked his head. “You can get it today.” When Baekhyun opened his mouth to reply, Chanyeol cut him off. “We’ll talk about this later. Go shower first. Then go to the kitchen. I wanna propose something to you.”
“Really?” Baekhyun said with bright eyes. “I have something to propose to you, too! I need to get my list—hold on. Yeah. Let’s talk later.”
As Baekhyun left—almost tripping on the large cover that Chanyeol had thrown over him—Chanyeol was left wondering what it was that Baekhyun was going to propose. In the back of his mind, he already knew that it was going to be stupid beyond belief.
When he got to the kitchen, Kyungsoo was sitting at the island with Kai and his laptop. Without even looking up, Kyungsoo nodded over to the direction of the dinner table. “You can either choose to eat the leftovers from breakfast or just head straight onto lunch. There’s milk in the fridge if you want.”
“Thanks, Kyungsoo,” Chanyeol yawned as he ruffled his damp hair. As he passed by the two, he glanced over at what was on Kyungsoo’s screen. “What’re you two doing?”
“Looking up recipes,” Kai replied.
“Because,” Kyungsoo said, sighing as he spun his chair around to face Chanyeol, “my cooking is apparently boring.”
Within a second, Chanyeol’s eyes were on Kai. In Kai’s defense, he threw his hands up in front of him. “I didn’t say it was boring. I just suggested we try something else for once.”
Snorting, Kyungsoo turned back around. “Well, you implied it. Same thing.”
Kai gave the back of Kyungsoo’s head a glare before going back to join the irritated cook in their search for new food. Chanyeol let the two go be on their own and sat down to start eating. A few minutes passed with the two bickering about ingredients and practicality before Chanyeol was pulled into a conversation.
“So what’re you going to do about Baekhyun?” Kyungsoo asked as he scrolled the page. Kai, who was trying to actually read the description of each food listed, pushed Kyungsoo’s hand off the laptop’s mouse pad.
“I’m gonna take him out,” Chanyeol answered simply. After a second, he added, “You know, he asked me about his paycheck this morning.”
Giving Kai sharp look for taking over the laptop, Kyungsoo replied. “What about it?”
“I can’t keep him as my maid if we’re in this type of relationship,” Chanyeol said, drifting off in thoughts and beginning to push his food around his plate.
“And what kind of relationship do you have?” Kyungsoo asked, pushing buttons.
“A romantic relationship,” Chanyeol muttered. He paused for a moment before straightening his position. “Anyways, I got a file from my parents. I need to look over the applicants.”
Kai’s ears suddenly perked and he turned around. “You’re going to replace him?”
“Yeah,” Chanyeol replied smoothly. “He’ll stay here, though.”
“So you want Baekhyun to be some sort of in-house mistress?” Kyungsoo piped.
“He’s not my mistress,” Chanyeol curtly said. “He’s my fiancé—”
“Chanyeol,” Kyungsoo said, sighing. “He doesn’t know that. He’s going to think it’s something else.”
“It’s gonna be fine,” Chanyeol said, waving Kyungsoo off. “He’ll understand. It makes me feel like I’m paying him for sex, which isn’t the case.”
Pursing his lips, Kyungsoo went back to staring at his laptop screen. “Alright. Whatever works in your relationship, I guess.”
Baekhyun’s entrance was quite extravagant. It was extravagant in the sense that he wasn’t wearing anything mismatched or “comfortable” clothing. He was dressed up in a similar style like the night before and Chanyeol could tell that he had strategically used the blow dryer to style his hair in that messy fashion. In a way, Chanyeol felt a little jealous because he didn’t know why Baekhyun had decided to dress that way.
“Morning!” Baekhyun sang as he made his way over to the table. He didn’t sit down with Chanyeol as expected. Instead, he picked up his plate, put food on it and ate standing up. “Where’s Nugget?” he said before taking his first bite.
Chanyeol, who was still struck by the fast pace Baekhyun was going at, blinked a few times. “Baekhyun, sit down.”
Ignoring him, Baekhyun continued on. “I haven’t seen him since last night.” Feeling Chanyeol tug at the hook of his jeans, Baekhyun reluctantly took a seat beside the giant. “Oh, I have my list. It’s in my pocket. I can’t get it now because my hands are kinda full,” he said, shrugging.
“Maybe if you set it down on the table like a normal person,” Chanyeol started, “you’d have hands to use.”
Baekhyun paused for a second. Then he set his plate down. “Okay—hold on,” he said as he stuck his hand in his jeans’ back pocket.
Seeing Baekhyun struggle with sticking his hand in the back pocket of his jeans, Chanyeol snorted. “Either wear looser pants or make your butt smaller. It’ll make it easier.”
After successfully grabbing his list, Baekhyun threw Chanyeol a look. “Do you really want me to get a smaller butt? Hm?” he asked, jabbing Chanyeol on the side with his elbow.
Moving away from Baekhyun’s childish hits, Chanyeol grinned. “No. I don’t.”
“That’s right,” Baekhyun scoffed.
“I love kneading your ass,” Chanyeol said in a low voice as he leaned in towards Baekhyun’s ear. “I love spreading it and running my hands on it—Do you want donuts, Baek? Cause I can feed you some if that means your ass will get a little bit bigger.”
Baekhyun scrunched his face. “You’re gross.”
“You’re the one to talk.”
Rolling his eyes, Baekhyun took his chair and turned it to Chanyeol. “Do you wanna go first?”
“Go first?” Chanyeol said with a quizzed look on his face.
“You said you had something you wanted to propose to me…” Baekhyun mumbled, somewhat reminding Chanyeol of what he had said back in the bedroom. “Or maybe you forgot—”
“No, no I didn’t,” Chanyeol said, quickly dispelling the notion. He took a minute to decide what to do, and in the end, nodded his head at Baekhyun. “You can go first.”
“Okay, well while you were gone, I watch some stuff,” Baekhyun said, drawing his eyes to the floor and wearing a wide grin on his face, sparking curiosity in Chanyeol. “So then I thought—”
“What’d you watch?”
“What’d you watch while I was gone?” Chanyeol asked more specifically. “Porn?”
Baekhyun sighed. “No. My last membership ended two months ago and all the free ones aren’t high quality…” He lingered for a second, leaving Chanyeol stumped before moving on. “Like I was saying, I was watching the movie Burlesque and I got this feeling in my stomach after watching it.”
“The need to throw up?” Chanyeol snorted.
Baekhyun smacked Chanyeol on the thigh. “Wrong! It made me want a pole!” he cried excitedly.
“Like a javelin pole?” Chanyeol asked as he rubbed the area where Baekhyun had hit him.
“No,” Baekhyun hummed, cocking his head, “like a stripper pole—”
Baekhyun frowned. Then he lifted up his list. “I didn’t even get to show you my list...”
Pursing his lips, Chanyeol snatched the piece of paper from Baekhyun’s hand and scanned over it. “Stripper poles can be used for exercise…”
Baekhyun shrugged. “Everybody thinks it’s so easy, but it takes a lot of upper body strength to get yourself up on one of those.”
Chanyeol looked at Baekhyun. “And why do you need to make your upper body stronger?”
“I don’t,” Baekhyun replied too quickly.
“Then you don’t need it for exercise,” Chanyeol adamantly said. “Reason one’s invalid.”
Realizing his mistake, Baekhyun tried to recover. “No—I mean, I do need it. I need it so that I can lift things. I—”
Chanyeol ignored him. “You can rent it…” He groaned. “You want to rent it and touch something that other people have touched and grinded on? I don’t think so.”
“It’s still a no.”
“You’re being unfair,” Baekhyun whined.
Shaking his head, Chanyeol read reason three. “Firefighters use poles…They are good people…I should get one, too…” He stopped for a moment to give Baekhyun frowning look. “Really, Baek.”
“I’m a good person and therefore I should get one!” Baekhyun argued.
“Yeah, Bill Gates was a great guy, too. I bet his wife installed one just for him also,” Chanyeol muttered sarcastically. Moving down the list, he continued on. “It’s made out of stainless steel just like the bike I refuse to buy for you?”
“Yeah, it’ll never rust,” Baekhyun said, adding a fact. “That means it’s low maintenance.”
Baekhyun had a valid point, but Chanyeol wouldn’t let reason number four go by without an argument. “It’d still take up space—easy maintenance or not.”
Groaning, Baekhyun attempted to take the list back, but Chanyeol pushed him away at arm’s length. “Let’s see. Students need books…dancers need studios—I need a pole in my room.”
“I do,” Baekhyun said as he tried to move Chanyeol’s hand of his chest so he could reclaim the list.
“Well, aren’t you an imaginative little thinker,” Chanyeol muttered as he glanced at his frustrated stripper-wannabe. “It’s easy to install—Okay, moving on.”
“…It’s professional equipment.” Raising his brows, Chanyeol gave Baekhyun an amused look. “Like strip club ‘professional’?”
“Does it matter?” Baekhyun replied huffing. “It’s still professional.”
“Yeah, well, it’s still a no.” Looking over the rest, Chanyeol sighed. “Baek, none of these are really convincing.” After seeing the look on Baekhyun’s face made Chanyeol stop for a moment. “Why do you want this, Baek?”
Baekhyun toyed with his fingers for a second before he sighed, giving Chanyeol that look in his eyes that made him seem like a dog asking for more food when it was already fat and stubby. “I thought it’d be fun to have one.”
“What part of it would be fun?”
“Sliding up and down on it,” Baekhyun mumbled, dropping his eyes down.
After studying Baekhyun’s demeanor for a second, Chanyeol forced the male to look back up at him and smirked. “What part of it would be fun for me?”
Blinking, Baekhyun broke a small grin. “Oh, you can use it, too, if that’s what you want.”
Chanyeol’s smirk disappeared. “I don’t want to use the pole, you idiot.”
“I was kidding,” Baekhyun laughed, pulling his chin away from Chanyeol’s hand. “I know you want some kind of strip tease.” Abandoning his chair, Baekhyun moved in front of Chanyeol, carefully spreading his legs and dropping himself on the giant’s lap. “You wanna collar me,” he whispered in Chanyeol’s ear. “You wanna collar me and tie me to it like an animal.”
Putting his hands on Baekhyun’s waist, Chanyeol grinned. “And?”
“You want me to hold on to it while you do things to me,” Baekhyun rasped.
Running his hands down lower, Chanyeol began to touch Baekhyun’s thighs. “These are better arguments than all ten of the stupid ones you put on that list of yours,” he growled.
“—Can you two stop it?” Kyungsoo snapped from the island, breaking the small world that Chanyeol and Baekhyun had put themselves in. “Kai and I are still here.”
Normal people would’ve been embarrassed, but Baekhyun and Chanyeol just burst out laughing. Wrapping his arms around the smaller male, Chanyeol allowed Baekhyun to laugh his fragile heart out, because for the first time, Chanyeol realized that Baekhyun’s laugh wasn’t as annoying as he thought it was.
Chanyeol didn’t get around to telling Baekhyun about his own proposal until after Baekhyun had eaten his late breakfast. He waited for Kyungsoo and Kai to move elsewhere, and just as he was about to bring it up, Nugget had suddenly burst in from Sehun’s room, running—or waddling—quickly towards his dad, stealing Baekhyun’s attention from the giant.
Minutes went by with Baekhyun bouncing Nugget softly on his lap and singing songs meant for children to the small dog. Chanyeol was obviously number two on Baekhyun’s priority list outside of the bedroom.
When Baekhyun got up to get Nugget his food, Chanyeol took the opportunity to make his proposal. “Do you like animals?” he burst out.
Baekhyun stopped in the midst of pouring Nugget’s food into his bowl—consequently making Nugget antsy, trotting back and forth to try and gain back his dad’s attention. With his mouth hung open, Baekhyun’s eyes darted back and forth from Nugget and Chanyeol. “I don’t know, Chanyeol. Does it look like I like animals?” he baited.
Looking down at Nugget, who was pawing at his dad to give him his food, Chanyeol admitted the stupidity of his question. “There’s a zoo fifty miles from here.”
“That’s neat,” Baekhyun said, smiling down at Nugget as he crouched down and finally gave Nugget his lunch.
“I wanna take you there.”
Baekhyun whipped his head up. “Like a zoo date?” he asked, laughing.
“I don’t know if you wanna call it a date,” Chanyeol said, trying to act nonchalant as he shrugged.
“Oh, so we’re just two people, who kiss and fuck, going to a zoo together,” Baekhyun said, grinning.
Not liking the way it was worded, Chanyeol shook his head. “Nevermind. We can call it a date.”
Scratching Nugget’s back as he ate, Baekhyun laughed. “That’s funny.”
“You asking me out,” Baekhyun said quietly as he watched Nugget eat. “Why’re you doing that?”
Chanyeol stopped. “What’s wrong with wanting to take you out?”
“It’s just a little weird.”
“Baek.” Chanyeol waited for Baekhyun to look up at him, but when Baekhyun continued to give his attention to Nugget, who didn’t even ask for it, he got out of his seat and walked over to the male ignoring him. Reaching down, Chanyeol pulled him up by the hood of his jacket. “What do you mean it’s a little weird?”
Baekhyun shrugged, taking a step back—though he was only followed by Chanyeol. “I’m kind of used to keeping things on a physical level.”
“I think that once you start kissing me and straddling me outside the bedroom, it’s more than just something physical,” Chanyeol said as he closed in on Baekhyun, forcing him to bump into the counter.
“I think that you should remind yourself that you don’t like me very much, Mr. Wonderful,” Baekhyun said, feigning a laugh. “What’re you doing asking me out?”
Chanyeol stopped and pulled back, giving Baekhyun some space. “Maybe I changed my mind.”
“You change your mind a lot—”
“Do you wanna go or not?” Chanyeol bluntly asked, putting Baekhyun on the spot.
Baekhyun looked down for a moment. Nugget had stopped eating and perked his ears, listening to the two adults bickering about why one wanted to go on a date with the other. In other words, Nugget was listening to human problems: relationships.
After some time, Baekhyun looked up and shrugged. “Maybe…”
“I don’t take partial answers.”
“You don’t take partial anything—”
Chanyeol sighed. “Baekhyun. Do you—or do you not—want to go to the zoo with me?”
Baekhyun bit his lips for a moment before putting his hands up in the air. “I wanna go!” he finally burst, almost gushing with excitement that he tried to contain from the moment that Chanyeol suggested going on some form of date. “I wanna see your mom and dad. I wanna see the apes that gave birth to y—”
One of the most effective ways to shut Baekhyun up—as Chanyeol found—was to occupy his lips with another pair. Not only did it make the smaller male be quiet and stop talking, Chanyeol also found that Baekhyun was much more cooperative. Even as Chanyeol had accomplished his mission, he left his lips lingering inches from Baekhyun’s, teasing him with brushes here and there.
“All you needed was to say yes instead of going off tangent and implying that I’m a product of two primates.”
Dropping his eyes to Chanyeol’s lips, Baekhyun weakly grinned. “But you are.”
Then, in a solemn voice, Chanyeol stepped back and said, “You know, if you wanna meet my parents, you can. If that’s what you want.”
Not taking Chanyeol seriously, Baekhyun snorted and pushed the giant away so he could free himself from the position he was in. “Right. And you’ll meet my parents too.”
“I might have to one day.”
Shaking his head, Baekhyun fixed his outfit. “I don’t think you wanna meet my parents—maybe my mom. Wait, I think you’d have a field day with my dad.”
“Would I?” Chanyeol asked as his eyes followed Baekhyun.
“You both like what you do for a living,” Baekhyun said with a small grin. “Anyways, why’re we talking about this? I need my money, Chanyeol.” He held out his hand. “Please and thank you.”
Crossing his arms, Chanyeol raised his brows. “Is that why you’re dressed up? You’re going into town?”
“How’ll you get there?” Chanyeol asked.
Baekhyun glanced around for a bit, trying to come up with a plausible answer that didn’t involve the word “car”, but immediately found that there was no way around it. “By…car…?” Baekhyun answered, prepared to get a loud rant about how he wasn’t allowed to drive.
“Do you have a license?” Chanyeol inquired instead of bulldozing right through Baekhyun’s answer.
“Wait, no I don’t.” Baekhyun had suddenly forgotten everything that was put on a license, which included home address and last name. “I just—I dreamt I had a license once. I guess I’m confusing my dreams with reality.” He gave Chanyeol a sheepish smile and shrugged. “Oops.”
Chanyeol—without a doubt—saw through everything. Baekhyun had a license, but he obviously thought Chanyeol didn’t know anything. It was fine, though. Chanyeol didn’t mind. It only gave him an advantage.
“Then you can’t take the car.”
Baekhyun puffed his cheeks and rolled his eyes. He tried to maneuver around Chanyeol, but the giant would step in the way. “Excuse you, Mr. Wonderful.”
“Oh am I in your way?”
“You’re in the way of my life, dreams, aspirations, and book store trip,” Baekhyun replied, cocking his head. “Yes, you’re in the way.”
“That’s too bad,” Chanyeol said, faking a sympathetic tone. “Now you can’t go get the car keys.”
Baekhyun looked behind him. “You do realize I can go around the other side of the dining table, right.”
Chanyeol glanced and saw that Baekhyun was right. Looking back at the smug male, Chanyeol scoffed. “It doesn’t matter. You’re still not getting those keys.”
“I got home safe last night,” Baekhyun pointed out. “I can obviously drive.”
“I don’t know that.”
Knowing that arguing would always lead them in nothing, but circles, Baekhyun pursed his lips. “Well, I need to go buy my books and you’re not willing to let me drive the car—oh! I know. Kai. Kai can drive me,” he said with a smirk.
Chanyeol saw the look on Baekhyun’s face and immediately knew what to say. “No. The last time you came home with Kai, you brought home a dog. I don’t want you coming back with a box full of stray kittens this time.”
Baekhyun pursed his lips and scrunched his brows. “I won’t! What’s the likeliness of me finding a box—I mean, I could find maybe one or two, but a box of kittens? I don’t think so.”
Becoming more impatient, Baekhyun frowned and slumped his shoulders. “Chanyeol—oh my god. I’m twenty-two years old and I’m not getting any younger. I want my books.”
Groaning, Chanyeol threw his hands up in the air and stepped out of the way, heading towards the hallway. “Fine. Whatever.”
“I can take the car?” Baekhyun said with his ears perking up.
“—I’m going to drive you,” Chanyeol quickly added. Upon hearing Chanyeol’s compromise, Baekhyun followed him to the hallway.
Nugget, who had lost interest in the two adults bickering, went back to eating until his fat little stomach couldn’t take anymore. Then he felt the need to leak so he quickly trotted his way back to Sehun’s room.
As Baekhyun walked behind Chanyeol, he said, “You better not ask for road head! I’m not gonna die without any dignity.”
Chanyeol chuckled as he reached his room and pushed the door open to begin changing into something that would make him look intimidating to anyone who dared look at Baekhyun while they were in town. “Relax. Road head’s not even that fun. If I really wanted to do something with you, I’d just pull over—just to be safe.”
Baekhyun sat on the bed as Chanyeol went about his business; changing into unnecessarily flashy clothes. They made him look sexier, yeah, but it wasn’t like Baekhyun wanted him to look that way. Chanyeol was just going to draw attention to himself and Baekhyun wasn’t about that. It wasn’t because he was jealous. No. Baekhyun scoffed at the notion of jealousy. It was just that Chanyeol was going to take the attention away from him—taking attention that would’ve been Baekhyun’s if Chanyeol just stayed in his “Casual Friday” clothes.
That was exactly it.
After a while of watching Chanyeol move about the room, Baekhyun asked, “So, when do you think you can get me that money?”
Taking off his shirt and unfolding a new one, Chanyeol gave Baekhyun a glance. “Check or cash?”
“I like cash. It saves me time from writing all that stuff and cashing it in,” Baekhyun sighed. “The only thing better than cash are credit cards, but I can’t use mine…”
“Oh?” Chanyeol said, making it seem like he was interested as he slipped on his shirt. “You have a credit card?”
“No, I lied,” Baekhyun muttered. “I was pretending again.”
“Just like how you pretend you have a license?”
“You pretend a lot, Baek,” Chanyeol sighed. He ran a hand throw his hair and decided he didn’t feel like styling it just for a simple visit to the local book store. Instead, he walked over to his desk and picked up his sunglasses before motioning for Baekhyun. “Let’s go,” he said as he took his car keys from his desk drawer.
“Never mind your money,” Chanyeol said. “I’ll pay for it.”
“You’re going to pay for my romance novels…” Baekhyun said, clarifying the situation just in case Chanyeol didn’t understand.
Shaking his head, Baekhyun shrugged. “Okay. I guess it’s on you then. Does that mean I get unlimited spending privileges?”
“For today,” Chanyeol reasoned.
“I don’t want you to go bankrupt.”
“Believe me, Baek,” Chanyeol said as he took Baekhyun’s hand and started to lead them out his room, “you’re not going to break my bank.”
The night before, Baekhyun had parked the SUV outside, fearing that if he opened the garage door, the sound would wake up the other members in the household. But, as he found, he should’ve put the car back inside.
As Chanyeol backed his car from the driveway, he looked back at the other car after switching gears and squinted. He saw a streak—a very noticeable streak. “Is…What the hell is that?”
“What?” Baekhyun asked, craning his head to see what Chanyeol was going on about.
There was a pause. Then Chanyeol whipped his head around to the confused male beside him, giving him an intense look. “Is that a scratch, Baek? Is that a scratch on my fucking SUV?”
Raising his brows, Baekhyun hummed and looked out his window. “Maybe...”
“Who did it?”
Baekhyun glanced around for a moment as he back tracked his memory to the time when that scratch was created. He remembered hitting the cart. He remembered Kai freaking out. What was it that they were bickering about? Baekhyun thought and then he remembered.
“Baek, I don’t wanna get in trouble with that guy…”
“If he finds out, I’ll take the heat for it…”
“Baek,” Chanyeol said with a warning-like tone in his voice, snapping Baekhyun out of his thoughts. “Did you do this?” When Baekhyun didn’t answer, Chanyeol glared. “Baek—”
“Kai did it.”
